## Description

The Music Liberation Front Sweden is the long-running project of UK-born Michael Evill (Vince Casino), working alongside a shifting group of like-minded collaborators. Active for over two decades, the collective first surfaced with the self-declared anti-pop release Though I Wasn’t Doing Much I Felt More Satisfied With My General Situation Than I Should Have Been (saasfee, 2004), a record whose lineage reportedly reaches back even further, with some musical stems tracing their origins to the 1980s.
Their latest release, A Collection Of Warped Pop Songs, spans eight tracks and a 41-minute runtime, offering a kaleidoscopic assortment of whimsical, bucolic, and at times eerily playful compositions. Across the album, tension and release are carefully balanced through hypnotic repetition and meticulous arrangement, with a broad range of instrumentation employed to sustain immersion. Each track functions as a subtle deconstruction of a discrete pop subgenre, recalling Boyd Rice’s similar conceptual dismantling under his Non moniker. This approach is especially evident on Only Happy People Die Young! and A Thomas Tiley Shaw Shanty, while Life Around The Sailing Club and Plastic Glasses For Dysfunctional People introduce flashes of krautrock-inflected experimentation.
The closing track, SunsetStripParty, resolves the album with an unexpectedly uplifting, reduced pop hook, forming a loose bookend with the opener My Happy Street Song. Ultimately, A Collection Of Warped Pop Songs thrives on its melodic eccentricity and patient structural build, rewarding attentive listening with an experience that is as immersive as it is quietly subversive.
